're learning that the obama campaign raked in a whopping $181 million in september. that is the most either side has raised in a single month this election cycle. no word yet on the romney camp's monthly total, but the campaign does say it collected more than $12 million in online donations. that is just since wednesday's debate. team romney is also rolling out a new tv ad today, featuring a former obama supporter, who says she has changed his mind. >> i'm disappointed in barack obama as my president, because he promised to bring us all together. and we're all going to be able to prosper. i don't see the prospering. >> and big news out of ohio, where an appeals court has upheld a ruling that reinstates early voting on the final three days before election day. the ruling means that people in ohio can continue to cast their ballots up until election day, depending on the decisions of local election boards. it's a win for the obama campaign, which has filed a lawsuit arguing everyone should be able to vote on those days. we'll have more on all these stories throughout the next three hours. >>>
mitt romney has hammered president obama about job growth. elect me, i can turn the economy around. but today the rationale for his entire campaign is crumbling. the new job numbers are out and unemployment has dropped to 7.8%. under 8% for the first time since president obama first came into office. that's progress on jobs and that's good for america. but it's absolutely demolishes a favorite romney talking point. >> three years later, unemployment is still above 8%. >> we've gone 41 months with unemployment above 8%. >> we've had 42 straight months with unemployment above 8%. >> still 8% with over 43 straight months. >> today, that talking point disintegrated and president obama has a strong record to campaign on. >> this morning we found out that the unemployment rate has fallen to the lowest level since i took office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> now, governor romney issued a statement today saying, quote, this is not what a rea
below 8% in september which is good news for president obama and a new conspiracy theory for some republicans. >> we've had 43 straight months with unemployment above 8%. >> a major victory for president obama. >> the white house got some welcome news. >> the unemployment rate has fallen who its lowest level since i took office. >> this is excellent news. >> it's definitely a good day for the american economy. >> 7.8. >> 7.8. >> there's no way that's right. >> there are some people out here who don't like this number. >> the harsh back and forth. >> over today's jobs reports. >> now we've sea got jobbers. >> business pioneer jack welch calls these numbers into question. >> these numbers don't smell right. >> jack welch was a successful businessman. >> this is about asking questions. >> on this subject he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. congressman west, take it away. >> you can't deny the numbers. >> don't challenge my intelligence. >> there's not a shred of evidence they've ever manipulated this number. >> people have stopped looking for work. >> more and more peo
had two october surprises. first, there was president obama's weak debate performance. and then today the jobs report, the second-to-last monthly jobs report to be released before the election is very good news for president obama. unemployment has fallen below 8% for the first time since the president took office in january 2009. the september jobs report showed the u.s. added 114,000 jobs with the unemployment rate dropping to 7.8%. the better news was the bureau of labor statistics was revising job reports for the last two months finding the economy actually added 181,000 jobs up from 141,000 in august. and in august the economy added 142,000 jobs up from the initially lack luster 96,000 initially reported. so there were in total 200,000 new jobs on this jobs report. president obama tried to put today's good news jobs report in context, campaigning in virginia. >> after losing about 800,000 jobs a month when i took office, our businesses have now added 5.2 million new jobs over the past 2 1/2 years. this morning we found out that the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest leve
strategist bob shrumpf. a republican talking point died a bloody death today. >> the obama administration promised that unemployment would not exceed 8%. >> would not exceed 8%. >> unemployment under 8%. >> below 8%. >> tonight a requiem for the 8% promise. the mitt romney coal miner story got even uglier today. we'll talk to the author of a new report that claims the owner of the ohio mine mitt romney visited forced workers to donate to the romney campaign. and the legendary actor lavar burton is mad at mitt romney for going after big bird. >> i'm going to stop other things. i like pbs. i love big bird. >> tonight the real story about pbs. >> the real story? >> the real story. good to have you with us tonight folks. thanks for watching. the unemployment numbers for september were released today. it is good news for the american recovery. somebody said obama didn't know anything about the economy. well, forget that for now. the national unemployment rate fell to, count it, 7.8%. 114,000 jobs were added to the payrolls. an additional 86,000 were added to revisions for july and august. the
, gentlemen, for joining me. john, i want to come to you first because i want to play what president obama and governor romney said just a short time ago reacting to the jobs reports. let me play those first, both of them. >> there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month, and the unemployment rate as you noted this year has come down very, very slowly. it's come down nonetheless. the reason it came down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> so john harwood, before we talk about this back and forth, i want to talk about the psychological impact of the rate falling below 8% today. >> it's positive for obama and say that the rate is where it was when i took office. i don't think we should be under any illusions. 7.8% is a high unemployment rate, weak economy. it is a talking point for the administration, and it will get a lot of media atte
america! there is only the america that can't believe how bad this guy did in the debate! obama lost despite mitt romney doing this. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs, i'm going to stop other things. i like pbs. i like big bird. i actually like you, too. i'm not going to spend money on things to borrow money from china to pay for it. >> he [ bleep ] fired big bird! he still won walking away. romney won with the sound up. >> you're entitled to your own airplane and your own house but not to your own facts. >> romney won with the sound off. dude, he's yelling at you! look up! look up! what are you looking at? what are you writing that's so important? what are you doing -- oh, that's not -- oh, i didn't realize. that is impressive work. i didn't realize that. maybe you could give that to mitt romney as a souvenir of the night he crushed you in that debate. >> my gosh. okay. >> so that's what he's doing. because i'm sitting there going, what's he doing? >> good morning, everyone. >> it makes more sense. it fills in the blank. >> that gives us proper context. >> it i

election day. there's big news on fundraising and this hour. president obama and the democrats raised $181 million in september. that is the highest election monthly total so far. meanwhile the romney camp claims it has collected more than $12 million in online donations and seeing bigger crowds on the campaign trail since wednesday's debate. but these numbers are still seizing the headlines according to conspiracy theories. jobless rate down to 7.8%, the lowest since the president took office. total employment increased 872,000. that's the biggest jump in the monthly number since june 1983. both candidates weighed in on the numbers. let's take a listen. >> we have learned that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since i took office. more americans are entering the work force. more americans are getting jobs. but too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills. many of them since long before this crisis hit. we owe it to them to keep moving forward. we've come too far to turn back now. >> do you realize that the number of people

'll get to what's happening out there. politics from the front page. new word from president obama and mitt romney on the latest jobs numbers. the president hailing the 7.8% number as a sign of a recovering economy. a .3% drop from last month. mitt romney, meanwhile, downplaying it. >> we learned the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since i took office. more americans are entering the work force. more americans are getting jobs. too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills. many of them since long before the crisis hit. we owe it to them to keep moving forward. we've come too far to turn back now. >> you realize the number of people in america, the participation of our adults in the work force were the same as when we got elected our unemployment rate would be about 11%. people in this country are having a hard time finding a job. people in this country are having a hard time making ends meet even if they do have a job. >> the 7.8% figure is the lowest since the president took office and total employment increased 873,0
here. when obama came in as we've discussed, we were losing 800,000, we're now gaining somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 jobs a month. that's a positive swing of 1 million a month. when obama game in we are at negative 9 gdp. now we're at 2, maybe 3. positive swing of 12. the romney thesis is that the economy was getting worse. it was obama's fault, and romney was mr. fix-it. and in each of those tenets it seemed to me they have gone out the window. i think obama will start asking where is the beef. the numbers are very clear about the economic turnaround since he's been president. he has an economic jobs recovery act now which by everybody's reckoning would create somewhere between 1 million and 2 million jobs. on the other hand, you have romney who has no economic plan whatsoever other than to say i want to cut taxes below the 15% ofg dp that they are right now, and then the other night he says, well, i don't want to actually cut the actual tax rate, i want to cut rates and then i want to increase deductions and give us effectively the same amount of taxes coming into the e
president obama hit people on fighting to deregulate. right now it's my great pleasure to be joined by nobel prize winning economist, joseph stiglitz. the price of inequality, how today's divided society eng dangers our future. and joy reid. dedrick muhammad and msnbc contributor karen hunter formerly of the new york and daily news editorial board. now a distinguished lecturer at the film and lecture department at hunter college. mitt romney delivered what appeared to be a pretty stunning victory in the first presidential debate wednesday night. he did this by using a time tested tactic that came as a surprise because it usually happens during the conventions, moving to the middle. at times, romney even got to the left of the president simply by denying, disowning, or apparently abandoning many of the policies he has spent many of the last years competing with. if he was caught off guard on wednesday, by thursday they had adjusted to the new entrant in the race, romney 2.0. at a rally president obama marvelled at the new software upgrade. >> when i got on the stage i met this very spirited f
strong month with 873,000 more employed americans last month than in july. president obama was back on the trail yesterday trying to temper his enthusiasm. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> mr. romney, of course, saw it a little differently. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> good try but actually this month, the rate fell because americans were finding work, not because they were dropping out of the labor force. he was right about one thing. >> the american people have a choice. i think in both men we have individuals who cared very deeply about our country and care about the people of america. but we would lead america in very different ways. >> well, that choice was crystal clear on debate night. now, liberal pundits grumbled and groaned over the president' decidedly underwhelming performance behind the podium. let's be honest, i was one of
%. the results of president obama's failed policies are staggering, 23 million americans struggling for work, nearly one in six living in poverty. there are 12.1 americans out of work, many of those jobs added though were part time and the number of people with part. time jobs seeking full-time employment did rise but what would you say to those who say i'm still out of work, i'm still struggling in this economy and this just isn't enough? >> that's, of course, why the obama administration is not spiking the ball tonight. but we are finally beginning to clean up the mess that was created under the bush administration and the blind eye that was turned to wall street, and, of course, romney is trying to change his story, too. in the debate he said, oh, i'm not against regulating wall street. really? they're for repealing the dodd/frank bill, creating the stage that would actually take us back to where we were at the hemorrhaging of jobs. we're finally beginning to turn the corner. >> when we look at what we saw on wednesday night, the president certainly under fire for this less than dynamic p
these polls showing an american electorate that is choosing president obama over mitt romney, these polls made them feel so uncomfortable they decided to develop a new fantasy electorate that they would poll in theory and their fantasy electorate which is not the real electorate would give them a much more comforting list of results in terms of their fake polls. it was the same dynamic at work when they invented conserve-a-pedia. something you read about the world on wikipedia, if it makes you uncomfortable as a conservative, conserve-a-pedia is guaranteed to only contain information that makes you feel okay. if you are discomfited by the idea the human species is a result of millenia of evolution for example conserve-a-pedia has you covered. don't worry. not only has conserve-a-pedia been debunked by the obvious fact that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but in fact according to conserve-a-pedia dinosaurs are actually still here. dinosaurs have been seen in papua, new guinea, twice since 1990. so says conserve-a-pedia. see, if you don't like the real world, invent your own. you know it is not
